Somolo solo, here is a story about a collaboration that transcended time and space.
In 1994, at Tapangu tribal community in Alishan, Professor Wu Rung-shun and I recorded “Somolo solo”, a traditional song of the Tsou tribe, unfortunately only familiar to the older generation.
Sayungu Tiakiana, one of the production assistants back then, is now the principal of Charshan Primary School. She taught her students this dying ancient tune by playing the album born out of our field research.
It’s therefore in Alishan that I began my creative career in chasing the music and the sounds.
Here I am, writing this piece of music that weaves together the sounds of yesteryear and the voices of Sayungu Tiakiana and her charges. The limits of time and space magically dissolve as the children and the original performers join in song.
* The Tsou people, when singing a traditional tribal song about everyday life, usually begin with “somolo solo” before improvising the rest of the song, describing their current state and mood. The singers would alternate; each begins with “somolo solo” followed by his/her improvisation, conversing in this way with one another.
