While hiking on a glacier, the tour guide seemed to have said “Mulan”— a heroine of an ancient Chinese tale— in describing the various glacial terrains. Very soon I realized, after careful listening, she in fact said “moulin”, which is French for a vertical shaft found within glaciers. It is a glacial feature formed by the melting surface ice that slowly drilled its way through the ice sheets, adding complexity to the glacial layers and perhaps leading to crystalline, kaleidoscopic ice caves.
